Chris took office as the Boyle County Attorney on January 7, 2019, and is currently serving his second term in office. He also is legal counsel for the Boyle Fiscal Court. Chris has focused on strengthening community safety, improving victim services, and supporting innovative approaches to rehabilitation and public service.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Herron earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1994 with a double major in Finance and Marketing. He went on to receive his law degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in May 2004 and was admitted to the Kentucky Bar in October 15, 2004. Throughout his tenure as County Attorney, Chris has worked closely with drug treatment facilities and implemented a Rocket Docket program where eligible persons charged with drug felonies receive amended misdemeanor charges upon successful completion of a 6-month substance abuse program. Chris was instrumental in applying for a VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) funded grant for the creation and funding of a full-time Victim’s Advocate position in November, 2019. When grant funding was reduced Chris successfully lobbied for the Victim’s Advocate to be fully funded by the Prosecutor’s Advisory Counsel (PAC) in October, 2023.

Chris’ dedication to service extends beyond the courthouse as he has served on several boards and clubs in the community including CASA of the Bluegrass, Community Arts Center, Kiwanis, and the Danville/Boyle County UK Alumni Club. Chris has also been deeply involved in local youth sports. He previously served as Assistant Golf and Tennis Coach for Boyle County High School and, in 2025, was named Head Coach of the Boyle County High School Girls Tennis Team. His commitment to faith and community is also reflected in his service as a deacon of the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.

jenny irwin

Jenny T. Irwin serves as the Assistant Boyle County Attorney, where she represents the Commonwealth for the Child Support docket and the Dependency, Neglect, and Abuse docket.

A Danville native, Jenny graduated from Boyle County High School before earning her degree from the University of Kentucky and her law degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law. She began her legal career as a private attorney with Smith Carpenter Cummins & Schulte, LLC in Jeffersonville, Indiana, practicing family law in Southern Indiana and Jefferson County.

From there, Jenny moved to the Northern Virginia/ Washington DC area. After spending five years there practicing at a boutique estate planning firm and enjoying everything that the big city had to offer, Jenny and her three children returned to Danville, where she joined Chris and the Boyle County Attorney’s Office. While proudly serving the families and children of Boyle County through her role as Assistant County Attorney, Jenny also rejoined Smith Carpenter in Jeffersonville and continues to provide representation for clients in Danville, Southern Indiana, and the surrounding regions, focusing her private practice on estate planning and family law.

Jenny is passionate about protecting the children and families of Boyle County, and when she is not in the courtroom, she enjoys spending time with her friends, family and children, Emma, Henry, and Shelby, whether by volunteering at Woodlawn Elementary, cheering them on at their various sporting events, or exploring Danville’s restaurants and community activities together.

Kirk Smith

A native of Corbin, Kentucky, Kirk graduated from Corbin High School before attending Eastern Kentucky University, where he obtained a B.S. in Fire, Arson, and Explosion Investigation. He then attended the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, obtaining his J.D. in 2019. He has been admitted to practice law in Kentucky and before the United States District Court for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky. He began his practice at a private firm, focusing primarily on civil litigation and appearing in courts throughout the Commonwealth. Kirk moved to Boyle County in 2022 and now serves as an Assistant Boyle County Attorney.

Despite being a cat person, Kirk is a proud Louisville Cardinal. He enjoys UofL athletics and, having grown up with family friends from Maine, New England area professional sports teams. In his spare time, he particularly enjoys Red Sox baseball games, travel, fishing, reading, and writing. He and his wife, Mackenzie, are members of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.

Ashley Edwards

Ashley Edwards has served as a Victim Advocate with the Boyle County Attorney’s Office since 2021. Edwards is a 1999 graduate of Danville High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Public Health from the University of the Cumberlands and contributes more than 18 years of prior public service experience to her position. In her role, Mrs. Edwards provides comprehensive support and advocacy for victims of domestic violence and various other crimes.

In addition to her advocacy work, Mrs. Edwards serves on the Perryville City Council, where she is committed to supporting her community and contributing to local decision-making.

A lifelong resident of Boyle County, she is also an active member of Southland Christian Church. She and her husband, Corey, have three children. In her personal time, she enjoys family activities, following sports, and spending time at the beach.

tina cox

Tina Cox

Tina Cox has been Legal Assistant for the Boyle County Attorney’s office for the past ten years. Ms. Cox is responsible for all supporting documentation for the criminal dockets including discovery, histories and all requests by other entities. She also handles administrative duties within the Boyle County Attorney’s Office including bookkeeping, supplies, correspondence with other agencies, Bounce program, insurance probation and restitution.

Prior to her employment with the County Attorney’s Office Ms. Cox was a Deputy Clerk at the Boyle County Clerks Office. Ms. Cox has also worked with Law Enforcement for many years serving as Program Manager of the Highway Safety Branch of the Kentucky State Police and Public Information Officer for the Danville Police Department.

She is married to Rusty Cox and has two children, Charlie and Courtney. Her biggest blessings are her three grandchildren, Caroline, Gabby and Cate.

Karen Elder

A lifelong resident of Boyle County, Karen grew up in Forkland and graduated from Boyle County High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with honors from the University of Kentucky.

Karen has been part of the county attorney’s office since 2022. She brings more than 6 years of legal experience supporting the office, including time working for Chris Herron prior to his tenure as county attorney.

Karen actively participates in many civic and charity events throughout the community.
